Bus Operations


Fixed Route Bus Operator

  • Provide information to passengers in a courteous, efficient manner.
  • Use proper etiquette to assist passengers with disabilities.
  • Secure wheelchairs, operate lift.
  • Prepare written reports on accidents and incidents.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Paratransit (Small Bus) Operator

  • Properly operate small bus/van over prescribed route, following a manifest
  • Provide information to passengers in a courteous, efficient manner; use proper etiquette to assist passengers with disabilities
  • Complete daily manifest to include pick-up and drop-off times and odometer readings
  • Prepare written reports on accidents, incidents, road damage, etc
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a CDL Class B permit or license with a passenger endorsement.
  • CDL Training provided.

Operations Supervisor

Performs functions to provide supervision and coaching of fixed route and paratransit operators.  Ensures that operations are conducted in compliance with established operating requirements and to suit customer and community needs.

  • Monitor roll out of vehicles and roll in.
  • Drive routes to ensure buses are on schedule and that bus stops are in designed locations.
  • Investigate and report on accidents and incidents. Prepare first reports of injury and accident reports. Bring replacement bus or van to the scene of breakdowns to transport passengers or continue route.
  • Open and close Transfer Plaza and transit facilities and Westside.
  • Monitor and ensure the accuracy of “Extra Board” assignments.
  • Train on road activities including defensive driving, bus operation and fare-box procedures.  Prepare performance evaluations, reports regarding road call, complaints and accidents.  Receive and process employee exception time sheets, total hours and authorize exceptions.
  • Able and willing to work any shift required.
  • Class B CDL with a Passenger (P) endorsement required or obtain within probationary period.
  • All other duties as assigned.

2-year college degree preferred - not required.
Criminal Background and Driver’s license checks are performed.

Vehicle Maintenance and Support


Technician A

  • Applies knowledge of internal combustion, diesel & gasoline engines, power-trains, chassis components and sub-systems to all Votran vehicles.
  • Services, lubricates, removes and replaces components related to fuel, cooling, exhaust, engine performance, drive-train, hydraulic, and suspension systems.
  • Rebuilds engines and components
  • Interprets & performs corrective maintenance on complex schematic diagrams, both electrical and hydraulic.
  • Employs test, measurement and diagnostic equipment during troubleshooting procedures.
  • CDL training provided.
  • Must be able to obtain a permit for a Class B CDL with a Passenger (P) endorsement.

Rate: $21.29/hour

Technician B

Rate: $18.19/hour

Bus Cleaner

  • Cleans, details, and fuels buses.
  • Checks oil and fluids, and adds if needed.
  • Operates buses around the shop area and may drive to Orange City facility.
  • Work hours:
    • 5:30pm - 2:30am, Monday thru Saturday
    • 2:30pm - 11pm, Sundays
    • This position works nights, weekends, and holidays
  • CDL Training provided
  • Must be able to obtain a permit for a Class B CDL with a Passenger (P) endorsement.

Maintenance Supervisor

Perform functions to supervise shift operations related to the maintenance, fueling and cleaning of company vehicles, working within the limits of standard or accepted practice. Preferred candidate will have transit bus maintenance supervisor experience.  

  • Communicate with Director of Maintenance to ascertain evening shift requirements and determine the status of maintenance and employee issues.  Record information relating to activities and issues occurring.
  • Locate required parts, communicating with vendors as required.  Verify status of current maintenance operations and ordered parts.  Ensure that material issued meets with work order parts utilization lists and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Monitor roll-in of vehicles and receive and review defect sheets from incoming drivers.  Probe and pull fare box vaults as required.  Establish and communicate shift priorities and maintenance requirements and make specific assignments.  Monitor work and provide required direction and problem resolution.  Inspect vehicles being fueled and cleaned.  Sign off on completed work orders.
  • Communicate assignments and dispatch mechanic and service personnel to remote service location.
  • Properly document maintenance operations in progress so that priorities can be established for primary shift when repairs cannot be completed by end of evening shift.  Schedule next day's repair activities for maintenance department including preventative and unscheduled maintenance.  Determine spare vehicle to place in service as alternative.
  • Track and maintain data and prepare any range of special or periodic reports relating to tire utilization, parts requirements, component replacement logs and other related data.  Maintain work environment and ensure that work is accomplished in keeping established standards.  Prepare performance reports and counseling documentation.  Track time, days off, vacation and other elements of work time.  Calculate and authorize time cards.
  • Maintain all established safety protocols
  • All other duties as assigned

Must have general mechanical knowledge and maintenance supervisor experience.
Maintenance Supervisor experience preferred / minimum of 2 years supervisory experience required.
High School Diploma required /2 year college degree preferred.
 Mechanical training experience required or equivalent.
Class B CDL with a Passenger (P) endorsement required or obtained within probationary period.
Criminal Background and Driver’s license checks are performed.

Starting Salary: $2,348.37 per pay period
